Economy

German-Angolan economic relations are still modest. German exports accounted for some EUR 94,8 million in 2005 with imports (chiefly petroleum) totalling EUR 58,6 million.
Germany has taken part in Filda, the international trade fair held in Luanda, since 1999. The Federal Foreign Office funded five humanitarian demining projects. Since the peace agreement in 2002, the Federal Foreign Office has also financed 18 humanitarian emergency aid projects for more than EUR 3.5 million in Angola. Angola is a prospective partner country for development cooperation. Since the beginning of development cooperation in 1992, three Technical Cooperation projects in pro-development emergency assistance have been implemented. Two of these were merged in the integrated programme on local development and reintegration in 2003. A microlending bank has been receiving assistance since 2004 under German Financial Cooperation.

Culture and Science

Over 2,000 Angolans studied in the former GDR or were trained there as experts. This group, which includes some ministers, feel attached to Germany and the German language. Specific measures for this target group, for example German language courses to refresh or improve their knowledge of German are very well received. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation has an office in Angola. Its activities concentrate on trade unions, civil society institutions and the Angolan parliament.
